South Africa’s youth continues to face significant barriers to entering the labour market. Youth unemployment remains alarmingly high, with the unemployment rate among young people aged 15–34 reaching 46% in the first quarter of 2024. This highlights a critical gap in youth skills development at a time when the economy urgently requires a skilled and capable workforce.
We believe that young people who aspire to grow and secure employment must be empowered to reach their full potential. For this reason, The AM Foundation implements targeted youth skills development programmes aimed at school leavers and unemployed youth from disadvantaged communities, aged 18–35 years.
Programme Overview
Our three-month skills development programme is designed to equip participants with practical, job-ready skills and hands-on experience, increasing their chances of securing employment or pursuing entrepreneurial opportunities. The programme focuses on the following key disciplines:
Hospitality
Participants are introduced to essential kitchen, culinary and hospitality skills, including cooking and baking. Facilitators also assist learners by identifying entry-level job opportunities and connecting them with hospitality businesses seeking new talent.
Beauty and Wellness
Learners acquire the practical skills required for a career in the beauty and wellness industry, such as massage therapy, nail care and eyelash treatments. These skills prepare participants for entry-level employment or to start their own beauty-related businesses.
Sewing, Craft and Design
This stream focuses on sewing and creative production skills. Participants are encouraged to express their creativity while producing high-quality items suitable for retail. This pathway supports both self-employment and employment within creative industries.
Retail Readiness
Learners are trained in the fundamentals of working in the retail sector, preparing them for roles in supermarkets, shops and other retail environments.
Soft Skills Development
All participants receive comprehensive training in essential workplace skills, including basic numeracy and literacy, conversational English, CV writing, interview preparation, workplace etiquette and professional ethics.
Workplace Exposure and Opportunities
Participants are given opportunities to access internships and potential employment placements with reputable organisations such as The Twelve Apostles Hotel and Spa, Relate Trust, The Grand, The One & Only, Quay Four, Shell, and the International Hotel School.
By strengthening participants’ readiness for employment, further study or entrepreneurship, the programme ultimately connects them with development partners who offer meaningful career, education and business opportunities.
