What Are Learnerships?
Learnerships are structured, work-based learning programmes that combine formal training with on-the-job experience. They are designed to help young people gain practical skills, earn a recognized qualification, and improve their chances of entering the job market. These programmes are often aligned with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) and accredited by relevant Sector Education and Training Authorities (SETAs).
Momentum’s Learnership Opportunities
Momentum offers different learnership programmes, each aimed at developing specific skills and helping youth gain workplace experience:
1. Contact Centre Learner Learnership
One of Momentum’s most accessible programmes is the Contact Centre Learner Learnership, typically offered through Momentum Health (a division within the group). This programme:
-
Lasts about 12 months.
-
Combines classroom training with real work experience in a contact centre environment.
-
Leads to an Occupational Certificate: Health Care Benefits Advisor (NQF Level 5) — a nationally recognised qualification.
Learners gain skills in areas such as customer service, communication, handling client enquiries, and understanding health insurance systems. They also build a portfolio of evidence and complete assessments needed to earn the qualification.
Typical requirements include:
-
Completed Matric (Grade 12) with pass marks in English and maths or mathematical literacy
-
South African citizenship
-
Be unemployed and ready to commit full-time for 12 months
-
Willingness to learn and work in a client-focused environment
Although this learnership doesn’t always guarantee a full-time job afterwards, it gives participants valuable industry experience and boosts employability.
2. Short-Term Insurance Learnership
Momentum also runs a Short-Term Insurance Learnership — often in partnership with organisations like INSETA. This programme:
-
Runs for 12 months and provides structured training in the insurance sector.
-
Leads to a FETC: Short-Term Insurance (NQF Level 4) qualification, recognised across the industry.
-
Includes work experience in areas such as operations, customer service, and basic insurance work.
Learners usually receive a monthly stipend during the programme, helping support their participation while gaining on-the-job skills.
Minimum entry requirements typically include a Matric pass (with English and maths or mathematical literacy), being between 18–25 years old, and not currently studying or enrolled in another learnership.
Youth Development and Career Growth
Momentum’s learnerships form part of a broader commitment to youth development in South Africa. The company emphasises giving young people practical experience and confidence to launch professional careers in financial services. By participating in these programmes, learners not only earn qualifications but also gain exposure to corporate culture, teamwork, problem-solving, and industry tools — all essential skills for future employment.
Momentum’s learnership programmes are valuable stepping stones for young South Africans who want to:
-
Get practical work experience
-
Gain industry-recognised qualifications
-
Build workplace skills that employers value
Whether you’re interested in a contact centre role, short-term insurance, or other areas within financial services, Momentum’s structured learnerships can help bridge the gap between education and a successful career.
