The Local Government Sector Education and Training Authority (LGSETA) has officially opened applications for its 2026 Bursary Programme.

This bursary is designed to support unemployed South African students who are ready to study full-time at a University, University of Technology, or TVET College. The funding aims to develop future professionals who will strengthen and transform the local government sector across South Africa.

Who Can Apply for LGSETA Bursary 2026

LGSETA is looking for dedicated individuals who are ready to make a difference in their communities. To qualify, you must:

  • Be a South African citizen or permanent resident.

  • Be unemployed and accepted for full-time study at a recognised higher learning institution.

  • Be studying for a qualification that relates to the local government sector.

This bursary is ideal for students who want to pursue studies that directly support local development, governance, and service delivery.

What the LGSETA Bursary Covers for 2026 Academic Year

While the bursary details may vary depending on available funding, LGSETA generally assists with tuition, registration, and study materials. Funding is subject to approval and the availability of funds for that academic year.


How to Apply for LGSETA Bursay?

All applications must be done online — no emails or hand-delivered submissions will be accepted.

Follow these steps to apply:

  1. Go to www.lgseta.org.za

  2. Click on the ‘Services’ tab.

  3. Select ‘DG Bursary’ under the ‘Learners’ section.

  4. Follow the link for the 2025–2026 bursary cycle.

  5. Complete the online application form and upload all required documents.

Required Documents 

Before you start your application, make sure you have the following ready:

  • Certified copy of your South African ID (certified within the last 6 months)

  • Certified copy of your Matric Certificate or Grade 12 results

  • Acceptance or admission letter from your institution

  • Proof of registration (for current students)

  • Parent/guardian proof of income or affidavit if unemployed

Important Notes

  • Funding depends on available budget and LGSETA approval.
