What Is an NSFAS Appeal?
An NSFAS appeal is a formal request submitted by a student asking NSFAS to reconsider a decision where funding was either not approved or withdrawn.
Students who receive an unsuccessful outcome have the right to appeal within 30 days from the date their results are communicated.
Who May Submit an Appeal?
A student may submit an appeal if:

Their NSFAS application was rejected, or
-
Their funding as a continuing student was withdrawn
Appeals are considered subject to available funding and only for students who submitted an NSFAS application.
Who May Not Appeal?
Students are not eligible to appeal if:

They are registered for a qualification not funded by NSFAS

They have exceeded N+2 (or N+3 for students with disabilities)
-
They are gap-year students previously declined due to academic ineligibility
-
Their institution has not submitted or has submitted incorrect registration data
(These cases must be resolved with the institution directly)
Appeal Submission Process

Appeals must be submitted within 30 days of receiving NSFAS application results

Students must log in to their myNSFAS profile

All required information and supporting documents must be uploaded
Appeals Based on Income Threshold Exceedance
Appeals may be considered where the household income exceeds the threshold if one or more of the following applies, and valid proof is provided:

Household financial circumstances have changed since application submission
-
The main household income contributor has become incapacitated or deceased
-
The student has been legally declared independent of biological parents by a court
-
The student comes from a child-headed household, supported by a social worker’s report
-
Parents are divorced, and a court ruling assigns education costs to one parent only, who meets NSFAS financial criteria
Appeals Based on Academic Ineligibility
Academic appeals will only be considered if:

The student is a continuing student and was not a first-time entering student, and
-
Academic failure resulted from one of the following circumstances:

Serious illness lasting two months or longer

Death of an immediate family member

Being a victim of a violent crime
-
Pregnancy and childbirth during the academic term (with institutional confirmation)

A disability that affected academic performance (with medical proof and institutional evaluation)

Incorrect academic results submitted to NSFAS

All academic appeals must be supported by relevant medical reports, affidavits, death certificates, or institutional propensity letters.
