Central Johannesburg TVET College (often called CJC) is one of South Africa’s public TVET colleges, operating under the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET). It was established in September 2003 as part of national reforms to strengthen vocational and skills-based education, and it focuses on equipping students with practical, job-ready skills. 

TVET colleges are designed to be more hands-on and skills-oriented than traditional academic universities, giving students training that directly connects to employment opportunities and entrepreneurship. 

 Campuses

CJC has eight campuses spread across Johannesburg, with most within about 10 km of its central office in Parktown. The campuses make the college accessible to students from different parts of the city. 

Campuses include:

• Parktown Campus (Central Office) – Parktown – administrative heart and multiple course offerings. 

• Ellis Park Campus – Doornfontein – well-known for engineering and technical programs. 

• Alexandra Campus – Alexandra – technical and vocational programs. 

• Langlaagte Campus – Langlaagte – business and administrative courses. 

• Riverlea Campus – Riverlea – a community campus with a range of programs. 

• Smit Street Campus – Braamfontein – often associated with creative and hospitality courses. 

• Troyeville Campus – Troyeville – offers a mix of vocational programs.

 Courses and Fields of Study

CJC offers a wide range of nationally accredited programs that fall under two main qualification types:

1. 

National Certificate (Vocational) – NC(V)

These are practical, vocational programs that usually run from Level 2 to Level 4 and prepare students for direct entry into the workplace or further studies. Programs include:

• Business Studies (e.g., Marketing, Finance, Office Administration)

• Engineering & Related Design and Civil Construction

• Information Technology & Computer Science

• Hospitality & Tourism

• Safety in Society and more 

2. NATED (Report 191) Programmes

These are more industry-aligned courses, often from N1 to N6, focusing on technical and business skills:

• Engineering Studies: Mechanical, Electrical (heavy & light current), Motor Trade, Boilermaking, Building & Civil Engineering.

• Business Studies: Business Management, Financial Management, Human Resources, Marketing.

• Creative & Service Fields: Studio Work, Art & Design, Hospitality, Clothing Production, Music Performance. 

 Hands-On and Career Focused

Practical workshops, labs, and real-world training are central parts of most CJC programs to help students build job-related skills. 

 Students

CJC serves thousands of students from Johannesburg and surrounding areas. TVET college students often include:

• Recent matric (Grade 12) graduates

• Students seeking practical skills for immediate employment

• Learners interested in trades and technical professions

• Those wanting to enter business, hospitality, IT, or creative industries 

The college emphasizes accessibility and practical training, helping students from diverse backgrounds find work-relevant skills. 

 Student Finance and Support

NSFAS (National Student Financial Aid Scheme)

CJC students who qualify can apply for funding through NSFAS, which helps cover:

• Tuition fees

• Accommodation (if eligible)

• Transport and meal allowances 

NSFAS is aimed at students from low-income or working-class families who might otherwise struggle to afford post-secondary education. 

 You need to apply for NSFAS separately (via the NSFAS website) and meet eligibility criteria. 

Attendance and Policies

To remain eligible for NSFAS benefits and exams, students must maintain minimum attendance levels and follow the college’s academic policies.
