Position Purpose

To support the Train Driver in operating and handling various types of trains and locomotives (including airbrake, vacuum, high-speed, heavy haul, and passenger trains) safely and efficiently. The aim is to ensure cargo reaches its destination on time, in good condition, and in line with customer expectations.

Key Responsibilities

• Report for duty, receive task allocation, and prepare locomotives for operation
• Load, check, and maintain required equipment on locomotives
• Assist with locomotive start-up procedures and brake testing
• Prepare and test communication equipment such as radios and telemeters
• Conduct pre-trip inspections to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards
• Perform shunting activities, including coupling/uncoupling and moving wagons
• Assist the Train Driver during transit by monitoring signals, train movement, and safety conditions
• Respond to incidents and emergencies, ensuring protection of the train and infrastructure
• Maintain accurate records, including train journals and reports
• Carry out general administrative duties related to operations

Minimum Requirements

Educational Requirements

• Grade 12 with Mathematics and/or Physical Science

Additional Requirements

• Must be at least 21 years old
• Minimum height of 1.6 metres
• Physically and mentally fit (subject to medical assessments)
• Ability to carry heavy objects
• Must pass psychomotor assessments (Vienna Testing System)
• Willingness to undergo regular medical and safety assessments

Training Requirements

• Must successfully complete both theoretical and practical training
• Obtain certification to work independently as a Train Assistant
