GAUTENG DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT – INTERNSHIP PROGRAMME 2026–2028

The Gauteng Department of Environment is inviting unemployed South African graduates to apply for its 2026–2028 Internship Programme. Applicants must hold a completed National Diploma, Bachelor’s Degree, or Honours Degree in the relevant fields listed below.

The internship programme offers a fixed-term contract of twenty-four (24) months and provides graduates with valuable workplace exposure and professional development opportunities.


AIR QUALITY INTERN REF NO: AQ2026 (X1 POST)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month
Centre: Head Office, Johannesburg

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Earth Science, or Natural Science.

Duties:
Interns will gain structured workplace training and practical exposure aligned with their field of study. Responsibilities include participating in projects, workplace activities, and development initiatives under the supervision of experienced professionals.


POLLUTION & WASTE MANAGEMENT INTERN REF NO: PWM2026 (X2 POSTS)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month
Centre: Head Office, Johannesburg

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Natural Science, or Geography.

Duties:
Successful candidates will receive practical training and workplace experience relevant to their qualification while supporting departmental projects and activities.


ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT MANAGEMENT INTERN REF NO: EIM2026 (X1 POST)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month
Centre: Head Office, Johannesburg

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management.

Duties:
Interns will participate in structured learning programmes, workplace projects, and skills development initiatives within the department.


ENVIRONMENTAL POLICY, PLANNING & COORDINATION INTERN REF NO: EPPC2026 (X1 POST)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month
Centre: Pretoria (Council for Scientific & Industrial Research)

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Environmental Science or Environmental Management.

Duties:
Provide support in departmental programmes while receiving workplace exposure and mentorship in environmental policy and planning functions.


COMPLIANCE & ENFORCEMENT INTERN REF NO: CE2026 (X4 POSTS)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month
Centre: Head Office, Johannesburg

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, or Natural Science.

Duties:
Interns will assist with compliance and enforcement activities while gaining hands-on experience and training within the department.


OFFICE OF THE HEAD OF DEPARTMENT INTERN REF NO: HOD2026 (X1 POST)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Public Management, Public Administration, or Office & Technology Management.

Duties:
Successful applicants will support administrative and departmental operations while receiving structured workplace training.


FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT INTERN REF NO: FM2026 (X2 POSTS)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month

Requirements:
N6/Diploma/Degree in Financial Management or Accounting Science.

Duties:
Interns will gain practical financial management experience through participation in departmental finance functions and development programmes.


ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT INTERN REF NO: OD2026 (X1 POST)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Work-study, Operations Management, Management Services, or Production Management.

Duties:
Interns will assist with organisational development initiatives while receiving workplace-based training and mentorship.


INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY INTERN REF NO: ICT2026 (X1 POST)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month

Requirements:
Degree/Diploma in Computer Science, Information Technology, or Business Informatics.

Duties:
Successful candidates will gain ICT workplace experience through participation in departmental technology projects and support services.


COMMUNICATIONS INTERN REF NO: COM2026 (X1 POST)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Media Studies or related qualifications.

Duties:
Interns will assist with communication-related functions while receiving professional training and exposure in the communications environment.


GRAPHIC DESIGN INTERN REF NO: GD2026 (X1 POST)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Graphic Design or related qualifications.

Duties:
Interns will support design-related projects and departmental campaigns while gaining industry-relevant experience.


PLANNING, MONITORING & EVALUATION INTERN REF NO: ICT2026 (X2 POSTS)

Stipend: R8 174.75 per month

Requirements:
Diploma/Degree in Social Science, Public Management & Governance, or Monitoring & Evaluation.

Duties:
Interns will contribute to planning, monitoring, and evaluation functions while receiving structured training and professional development.
