Programme Overview

The South African Reserve Bank (SARB) invites high-performing postgraduate students to apply for its one-year Graduate Development Programme, commencing in February 2027.


About the SARB

The SARB plays a critical role in safeguarding South Africa’s economic well-being by maintaining price stability and ensuring a sound financial system. Its responsibilities include regulating the financial sector, managing interest rates, issuing currency, and overseeing financial stability.


About the Programme

Participants will be based at the SARB Head Office from February 2027 to January 2028, where they will:

  • Be placed within a department and gain practical work experience

  • Contribute to real projects and operational tasks

  • Attend structured learning sessions through the SARB Academy

The programme also focuses on developing essential professional skills such as:

  • Communication and presentation skills

  • Report writing and data analysis

  • Teamwork and professional etiquette

  • Personal effectiveness and workplace excellence


Post-Programme Opportunities

Top-performing graduates may be offered permanent roles within SARB. Selection will be based on:

  • Strong academic and workplace performance

  • Alignment with SARB values (accountability, integrity, excellence, respect, and trust)

  • Ability to work independently and within a team

  • Interest in areas such as monetary policy, financial stability, regulation, and financial markets

Applicants must hold a postgraduate qualification in fields such as:

  • Economics / Econometrics / Statistics

  • Public Finance / Policy Analysis / Research

  • Accounting / Auditing / Law

  • Financial Mathematics / Financial Engineering

  • Information Technology / Digital Technology / Fintech

  • Investment or Portfolio Management

  • Mathematics / Quantitative Analysis

  • Business Analysis / Risk Management

  • Actuarial Science


Minimum Requirements

To qualify, applicants must:

  • Hold an Honours degree or equivalent (NQF Level 8)

  • Be a South African citizen

  • Achieve a minimum average of 65% in their final year

  • Demonstrate strong academic performance

  • Have a keen interest in financial services or policymaking

  • Possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills

  • Be curious, motivated, and eager to learn
