About the Opportunity
AFGRI Equipment, an official John Deere agency since 1962, is inviting applications for 40 apprenticeship opportunities across South Africa. The company operates an extensive branch network locally and internationally and specialises in servicing agricultural, forestry, construction, golf, and turf equipment.
Successful candidates will be appointed as:
- Tractor Apprentices, or
- Earthmoving Apprentices
Apprenticeship Programme Overview
This is a structured 3-year apprenticeship programme designed to train and develop qualified:
- Tractor Mechanics, or
- Earthmoving Mechanics
The programme combines practical workplace training, formal studies, and technical development.
Probation Period
- The first 6 months will serve as a probation period
- Both the apprentice and the company may assess long-term suitability during this time
- Either party may withdraw during probation without penalties
Training Structure
After successful completion of probation, apprentices will enter into a formal apprenticeship contract with AFGRI.
Training may include:
- Practical training at accredited training institutes
- Distance learning through registered colleges
- Saturday classes where required
- Product-specific training by suppliers and AFGRI specialists
- Internal technical training programmes
Training Authorities
The apprenticeship is supported through:
- AgriSETA, or
- MerSETA
Important Information
- Training costs are covered by the company if all modules are passed successfully
- Failed subjects or training phases must be repeated at the apprentice’s own expense
- Apprenticeship agreements are based on a 3-year contract
- A work-back commitment applies after qualification
- The apprenticeship contract may not exceed 4 years
Apprentice Responsibilities
- Train towards becoming a qualified Tractor or Earthmoving Mechanic
- Assist with equipment repairs and maintenance
- Support stock control processes
- Provide customer service assistance
- Perform general workshop and operational duties
Minimum Requirements
- Valid driver’s licence
- Good communication skills
- Basic administrative abilities
- Computer literacy
- Grade 12 qualification with required subjects successfully completed
