Coastal KZN TVET College Work-Integrated Learning Programmes: Build Practical Skills for the Workplace
Coastal KZN TVET College is expanding its range of QCTO-accredited Occupational Programmes, giving learners an opportunity to develop practical, occupational and workplace skills in areas ranging from engineering and construction to hospitality, tourism, information technology, administration and agriculture.
The college describes these programmes as industry-aligned and practical, with the aim of preparing learners with skills and qualifications relevant to today's labour market.
What Are Occupational Programmes?
Occupational Programmes are designed around specific occupations and combine different forms of learning to develop occupational competence.
At Coastal KZN TVET College, the programmes follow the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) framework. The college's model includes Knowledge Modules, Practical Skills Modules and Work Experience Modules.
This structure is important because learners are not expected to rely only on classroom theory. They also develop practical skills and gain workplace experience relevant to their chosen occupation.
Work-Integrated Learning at Coastal KZN TVET College
Workplace learning is a central component of the occupational qualification model.
For example, the college's Mechanical Fitter programme includes work-experience modules covering engineering workshop processes, machine maintenance, maintenance planning, mechanical fault repairs, overhauling and workplace communication.
Similarly, the Chef programme includes workplace experience involving food production, kitchen operations, food preparation and cooking, while the Welder programme includes workplace experience in welding processes, materials handling, teamwork and reporting.
This gives learners an opportunity to apply what they learn in a practical environment.

The Hairdresser occupational programme is available at Durban Campus. It covers hair cutting and styling, chemical treatments, hair care, client consultation, salon hygiene and business skills.
How the QCTO Assessment Process Works
Coastal KZN TVET College explains that occupational programmes have several stages of assessment.
1. Formative Assessments
These are ongoing assessments during the Knowledge and Practical Skills Modules. They can include quizzes, practical tasks, simulations, workplace observations and learner self-assessments.
2. Internal Summative Assessments
At the end of the relevant modules, the college conducts formal assessments such as examinations, practical demonstrations, projects or portfolio assessments.
3. Workplace Experience
Learners must complete the required workplace experience for their particular qualification. A completed and signed Statement of Work Experience is required before proceeding to the final external assessment.
4. External Integrated Summative Assessment
The External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA) brings together knowledge, practical skills and workplace experience. Successful completion can lead to the awarding of the relevant Occupational Certificate.
Skills and Trade Training
Coastal KZN TVET College also operates an Occupational Skills Training & Trade Testing Centre at Hammarsdale.
The centre offers services including short skills programmes, learnerships, institutional artisan training, pre-trade-test assessment and trade testing. The college indicates that it has programme approval from MERSETA and CETA and is accredited as a CETA trade test centre for listed construction trades.
This creates additional opportunities for people interested in developing artisan and technical skills.
Tooling and Advanced Technical Skills
Another important facility is the college's Tooling Centre of Excellence, which offers occupational programmes and training related to toolmaking.
The centre provides training in areas including conventional machining, CNC machining, CAD/CAM, CNC simulation, laser cutting and 3D printing. Its Occupational Certificate: Toolmaker is listed at NQF Level 5 and includes structured workplace learning.
Why Consider an Occupational Programme?
There are several reasons learners may consider occupational training at Coastal KZN TVET College:
Practical learning: Students develop hands-on skills in addition to theoretical knowledge.
Workplace exposure: Work Experience Modules allow learners to gain experience related to their occupation.
Industry relevance: The college says its occupational programmes are designed to be aligned with industry requirements.
Career-focused qualifications: Programmes are built around specific occupations rather than general academic study.
Wide choice of careers: Learners can choose from engineering, construction, hospitality, IT, administration, tourism, agriculture, ECD and other fields.
Who Can Apply?
Entry requirements differ according to the occupational programme.
For example, some programmes have entry requirements around Grade 9/NQF Level 1, while others require Grade 10, Grade 12/NQF Level 4 or another relevant qualification. The ECD Practitioner programme, for example, requires an NCV Level 3 or another NQF Level 3 qualification, while the Poultry Farmer programme requires NQF Level 4/Grade 12 or equivalent with Mathematical Literacy.
Applicants should therefore check the requirements for their chosen programme before applying.
