What is BANKSETA?

The Banking Sector Education and Training Authority (BANKSETA) is responsible for promoting skills development within South Africa's banking and alternative banking (microfinance) sector. Through partnerships with employers, universities, TVET colleges, NGOs, and training providers, BANKSETA develops programmes that improve employability, support transformation, and strengthen the country's financial services workforce.

What Are BANKSETA Youth Programmes?

BANKSETA Youth Programmes are vocational education and training initiatives that help unemployed youth and graduates gain recognised qualifications together with valuable workplace experience. These programmes are designed to prepare participants for careers in banking, financial services, business analysis, management, and related fields.

Learnership Programmes

BANKSETA funds several learnerships that combine classroom learning with practical workplace training. Successful learners receive qualifications registered on the National Qualifications Framework (NQF), helping them build careers in the banking industry.

Letsema Post-Matric Learnership

The Letsema Learnership Programme is designed for unemployed matriculants who want to begin a career in banking.

Programme highlights include:

  • One-year learnership.
  • Workplace training with registered employers.
  • Coaching and mentoring throughout the programme.
  • Leads to an NQF Level 5 qualification in Banking Service Advice upon successful completion.

Minimum Requirements

Applicants generally must:

  • Be South African citizens with a valid South African ID.
  • Have a Grade 12 (Matric) certificate.
  • Achieve at least:
    • 60% in English.
    • 50% in Accounting or
    • 50% in Mathematics or
    • 60% in Mathematical Literacy.
  • Be unemployed.
  • Be under 30 years of age during the recruitment year.
  • Not be studying or participating in another learnership.
  • Have a clear criminal and credit record.
  • Demonstrate good communication skills in English.

Kuyasa Post-Graduate Learnership

The Kuyasa Learnership Programme is aimed at unemployed graduates who wish to further their professional development while gaining workplace experience.

The programme includes three qualification streams:

  • Management Development – NQF Level 5 Certificate.
  • Business Analysis – NQF Level 6 National Certificate.
  • Financial Markets – NQF Level 6 National Certificate.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants generally should:

  • Hold a completed three-year tertiary qualification in fields such as:
    • Financial Accounting
    • Financial Management
    • Human Resources
    • Risk Management
    • Information Technology
    • Marketing
    • Law
  • Be unemployed.
  • Be younger than 30 years during the recruitment year.
  • Have a valid South African ID.
  • Have a clear criminal and credit record.
  • Not be enrolled in another learnership or academic programme.

Career Guidance and Career Awareness

BANKSETA conducts career guidance initiatives to help learners understand career opportunities in banking and financial services. These programmes include career awareness workshops and resources for schools and communities.

Bursaries

BANKSETA partners with universities to provide merit-based bursaries. Depending on the partnership, funding may include:

  • Tuition fees.

Work Integrated Learning (WIL)
