About KZN Coastal TVET College

Coastal KZN TVET College (often called Coastal College) is a Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institution in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa that provides practical, career-focused education and skills training. It was formed through the merger of several former technical colleges — including Durban Technical College, Swinton Road Technical College and Umlazi Technical College — plus the Umbumbulu and Appelsbosch Colleges of Education. Today it’s one of the largest TVET colleges in the province, serving thousands of students across multiple campuses.

The college’s mission is to deliver quality education and training that meets the needs of both the local economy and the national skills agenda, helping students develop real-world skills employers look for.

What Coastal TVET College Offers

1. National Certificate (Vocational) – NCV Programmes
• These are full-time courses at NQF Levels 2–4, typically one year per level.
• Students study seven subjects per level, including core subjects like Communication (Language), Mathematics or Mathematical Literacy, Life Orientation, and vocational subjects tailored to a field (like Engineering or Business).

2. NATED (Report 191) Programmes
• These are accredited diploma programmes in Engineering and Business Studies.
• Engineering courses follow a trimester structure, and Business Studies follow semesters. Completing N6 plus practical workplace training can lead to a National Diploma.

3. Occupational Programmes & Skills Training
• Short courses and skills programmes are offered in areas like construction, trade testing, artisan training, entrepreneurship skills, and more. These help students quickly gain practical qualifications and job skills.

Campuses and Locations

Coastal KZN TVET College operates multiple campuses across the province, bringing training closer to communities. Some of the main campuses include:

  • Durban Campus (Umbilo)

  • Swinton Campus (Mobeni)

  • Umlazi-V Campus (Umlazi)

  • Umlazi-BB Campus

  • Umbumbulu Campus (KwaMakhutha)

  • Ubuhle Bogu Campus

  • Appelsbosch Campus

  • As-Salaam Campus (Braemar / South Coast)
    – plus special training centres like the Occupational Skills Training & Trade Testing Centre.

Each campus focuses on different programmes, so students can usually find courses suited to their interests and career goals.
