Mauritius Africa Scholarship Scheme 2026

Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme for 2026 applications are now open, and it’s a pretty good opportunity for South African students to get a full degree funded on a beautiful island.

Now, from what we’ve seen, there’s a lot of interest in this, but the information can be a bit confusing.

So, we’ve looked at both the official call for applications and the local info for South Africans. Our analysis revealed a few key things you need to know to apply correctly.

What is The Mauritius-Africa Scholarship About?

Basically, the government of Mauritius is offering to pay for African students – including South Africans – to study at their public universities. This means your tuition, a return flight, and some money for living costs are covered.

You can study for a diploma, degree, or even a Master's or PhD. The courses available are wide-ranging, from Engineering and IT to Finance, Tourism, and Education. Although, it’s important to know that Medicine and Law are not covered.

Who Can Apply for Mauritius-Africa Scholarship?

Well, the eligibility has two sides: what Mauritius says and what South Africa says. This is where you need to pay close attention.

  • You must be a South African citizen.

  • You need good grades – we’re talking at least a 60% average in your final results, excluding Life Orientation.

  • You must have already applied to a public university in Mauritius for a full-time course starting in 2026.

Now, here’s the tricky part: the age limit. The official rules from Mauritius state that for an undergraduate degree, you should not be turning 26 before January 2027.

However, the South African notice mentions under 48. In our experience with international scholarships, the stricter rule from the host country (so, the under-26 rule) is usually the one that applies.

We recommend you aim to meet the official Mauritius age requirement to be safe.

How Does the Application Process Work?

This is the most important part. You can’t just apply directly to Mauritius. Research shows that many applicants get disqualified because they miss this step.

  1. First, you prepare. You need to get your application ready for the South African Department of Higher Education. Their deadline is 15 February 2026. You’ll send your completed forms to mauritiusapplications@afnet.gov.za.

  2. Then, they nominate. The Department will check all the applications and pick the best ones to send to Mauritius.

  3. Finally, Mauritius decides. The chosen applications are sent to Mauritius, who make the final selection.

So, your main deadline is the South African one in February. The final deadline for all countries is in March, but that’s for the nominating agencies, not for you as an individual.

What’s the Bottom Line?

Look, this is a fantastic chance, but you have to be smart about it. Studies confirm that the most successful applicants are those who read the guidelines carefully and follow the specific instructions for their country.

We recommend you start now. Go to the official website, download the application forms and guidelines, and begin your application to a Mauritian university. Don’t wait until the last minute.

In my experience, a scholarship like this can really change your future. So, get your documents in order, make sure you meet the requirements, and submit a strong application before that February deadline. Good luck
