Chinese Government Scholarship 2026

Alright, so you’ve probably seen the ads for the Chinese Government Scholarship. Well, the good news is, it’s a real and fantastic opportunity for South African students. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is now officially accepting applications for Stage 2 of the process for the 2026 academic year.

Let’s break down what this actually means for you

About The Chinese Government Scholarship

In my experience, this is one of the most comprehensive scholarships available. The Chinese government covers the big costs like full tuition, a place to stay, medical insurance, and even gives you a monthly living allowance.

Then, the South African government tops this up with a return flight, a bit more money for living costs, and help with your visa. So, honestly, it’s a full package designed to make studying abroad affordable.

Here’s a simple explanation:

First, the Chinese government covers:

  • All tuition fees – you don't pay a cent to the university.

  • Free university dormitory or, if you live off-campus, they give you an accommodation subsidy.

  • A monthly living stipend:

    • Undergraduates: 2,500 RMB (about R6,500)

    • Master's students: 3,000 RMB (about R7,800)

    • PhD students: 3,500 RMB (about R9,100)

  • Comprehensive medical insurance – this is crucial for peace of mind abroad.

Then, the South African government (DHET) adds:

  • Return international flight tickets – a huge cost saving.

  • An extra monthly living allowance on top of the Chinese stipend.

  • A once-off settlement allowance to help you get set up when you arrive.

  • Visa application fees are covered.

  • They also provide pre-departure orientation and even research support for postgrads.

Chinese Government Scholarship Requirements: Who Can Apply?

The main thing is you need to be a South African citizen with a solid academic record—we’re talking at least a 60% average in your last qualification.

There are also age limits, which depend on what you want to study:

  • For a Bachelor’s degree: You must be under 26 years old.

  • For a Master’s: Under 35.

  • For a PhD: Under 40.

Our analysis revealed that they give priority to students in fields that help South Africa grow.

So, if you’re into Engineering, Computer Science, Agriculture, Climate Change, or Nuclear Energy, your application might get a closer look. Although, they do accept applications for other fields too, including learning the Chinese language itself.

How to Apply for Chinese Government Scholarship

This is where many people get confused. You can’t just apply on one website. Research shows that successful applicants carefully follow this two-step process:

  1. Apply to China: You must complete the online application on the official Chinese website: www.campuschina.org. You might also need to submit your application directly to the Chinese university you want to attend.

  2. Tell South Africa: Then, you have to email a copy of that completed application form and all your supporting documents to chinaapplications@dhet.gov.za.

You have to do both. If you miss one, you probably won’t be considered. The deadline for all of this is 05 January 2026.

What Documents Do You Need?

We recommend you start gathering these now. You’ll need your ID, passport, academic transcripts, and a few other things. A key requirement is a strong motivational letter—for a PhD, that means writing 800 to 1000 words explaining your study plan.

Also, if your course will be taught in Chinese, you’ll need an HSK language certificate. It’s a bit of paperwork, but it’s manageable if you start early.
